How to Save as .png, .jpg, or .pdf from Silhouette Studio

This article has been recently updated to account for changes after the release of Silhouette Studio Version 4.

Silhouette America recently rolled out an update to Silhouette Studio that allows users to save in more formats.

Save as .JPEG and .PDF from Business Edition

To Save as .JPEG or .PDF in Silhouette Studio, go to ‘File’, ‘Save As’, ‘Save to Hard Drive’, then select either .JPEG or .PDF under ‘Format’ as shown below. You’ll need Silhouette Studio Business Edition – buy it here.

Save as .PNG

Do you need to save as a .PNG with a transparent background? The easiest way to do this is to first save as a .JPEG, then remove the white background using Lunapic.com. Here’s how:

  1. Visit Lunapic.com and upload your .JPEG image using the ‘Browse’ button. How to save as .png, .jpg, or .pdf in Silhouette Studio (Mac Version) - by cuttingforbusiness.com
  2. Navigate to ‘Edit’, ‘Transparent Background’. Simply click on the white background and let Lunapic magically remove it for you! When the background is checkered instead of white, save it using the button near the bottom. How to save as .png, .jpg, or .pdf in Silhouette Studio (Mac Version) - by cuttingforbusiness.com

That’s it! It’s just that fast and easy!

Don’t have Business Edition?

If you don’t have Silhouette Studio Business Edition, you can take a screenshot of your design. On a MAC computer, hold down ‘Command’ + ‘Shift’ + ‘4’. If you need a transparent background, you can do so using the above instructions for lunapic.com. On Windows 10, use the snipping tool. Hold down ‘ALT’ + ‘M’ to launch it. Again, if you need, you can use lunapic.com to create a PNG with a transparent background.

I have business edition version 4.0.623ssbe but only see options for V3, V2 or GSP as file options when I chose save as. Do you know what I need to do to see the other file types?

Sandra, I think you have to update at least to 4.1.

    Hi Christine!
I just downloaded version 4 hoping that I could export my design at a .png file. I followed your above steps, but it did NOT give me the option to save my file as .png, only studio. Could this be because I only have the ‘basic’ version and need to upgrade to a paid version?
    Thanks,
    Jessica

Hello! Please re-read the post carefully. No editions allow you to directly save as a PNG. The post lays out a workaround. Thanks!

Do you have a screenshot of what you see? You should have all the options.

Thanks for the great post. I have a silly question but if you save as pdf from Sil. Studio can those that dont have cutters or software then cut by hand the designs. Are the designs sent as a pdf the exact size when they recieve it on their end as the way it was sent as a pdf? I ask because I want the end user to have the exact size of the design like for a paper piece specific size object when they recieve the design or invite. Also is their a suggested way to email the designs and tell them to open them. Starting my business but I want to avoid issues and know how to problem solve. THANK YOU!!!!

Hi Crystal, Yes, the PDF format preserves size and you could absolutely hand cut designs provided in a PDF. You could email them, or have them set up as a digital download through your website or a marketplace.

Do you know of anyway to send your design to silhouette testers to test designs. Its funny cause I feel that if I had someone to test a design I would be more confident in selling them as a business. Love all your info and overly appreciate the knowledge you share. Thank you!!!

Hi Crystal, I’d make friends with some other crafters, then have them test them.

When I go to Print—> Save as PDF in DE, the resulting PDF file is not great quality. Can you tell me if the quality is better when saving as a PDF from BE? I’d like to be able to sell printables, but I’m having file quality issues. I don’t want to invest in BE if it won’t solve this problem. Thank you!

Business Edition wouldn’t change the quality of print.
