Spring will be here soon and it is time for everyone to clean out their houses and spruce them up. I’ve seen several crafters selling doormats. There’s a good reason for trying out doormats – they are fast to make and profitable!

DIY Coir Doormat Supplies and Costs

  • Coir doormat – $10 and up. I couldn’t find a wholesale supplier with low minimums, but Home Depot and Lowe’s had reasonable prices starting at $9.97. (Quick trivia: Did you know that coir is the husk of a coconut?)
  • Stencil – Less than $1. I used plain cardstock, but I know that others use vinyl.
  • Spray paint – Less than $1. You’ll be able to make more than one per can of spray paint.
  • Painter’s tape – Less than $1. Again, you’ll be able to use your roll of tape for more than one doormat.
  • Time – Roughly $6.67. At an hourly rate of $20, designing, cutting, and painting should take you less than 20 minutes.

So, the breakeven on this product is about $20. Good news for sellers? Custom coir doormats sell for between $35 and $60 depending on your area. With a selling price of $50, that’s a profit margin of about 60%. Not bad! (This simplified example doesn’t take into account shipping or selling fees.)

Wondering about the font I used? I shared it on the Cutting for Business Facebook page last week. You can download it here – it is great for stencils!
