Tutorial: How to Correctly Size Your Facebook Cover Photo

I view a lot of Silhouette Cameo and Cricut Explore small business pages when I do free, weekly critiques in the Cutting for Business Insider’s Club. Unfortunately, I’ve seen a lot of pages that have an incorrectly sized Facebook cover photo. (Your cover photo is the large photo at the top of your business page.) So, let’s fix the problem today. After reading the information below, please check your Facebook page cover photo from a website browser and again from a mobile device to check that it is sized correctly.

What is the correct size for a Facebook Cover Photo?

The easy answer is: 851 pixels wide by 315 pixels tall – and less than 100 kilobytes in size. However, it isn’t really that simple. The actual display size is 820 pixels wide by 312 pixels tall. The takeaway here? Don’t put anything in the extreme outer edges of the image.

But Wait! There’s more!

(That kind of sounds like an infomercial, doesn’t it!?) When visitors to your Facebook page see your cover photo on a mobile device, it is cropped and only displays the center 640 pixels. The takeaway here? Put the important content in the center since more than 50% of Facebook visitors use a mobile device to access the network.

How to Create the Correct Size Facebook Cover Photo

Use a Facebook cover photo creator. Here’s a number of them:

  • PicMonkey – Use the Facebook cover photo template
  • Canva – Use the Facebook cover photo template
  • PageModo
  • Fotor
  • FotoJet

Or, use your favorite photo editor and size your image to 851 by 315 pixels with the important details in the center.
